Lab-Grown and Natural Diamonds: An Honest Comparison

The question we are asked most often across the counter in Sector 35C is a fair one: is a laboratory-grown diamond a real diamond? The answer is yes. It is diamond in every way that matters chemically and physically. What differs is where it came from — and that difference changes the price and the resale picture, so it is worth understanding before you decide.

What is actually the same

A laboratory-grown diamond has the same chemical composition (carbon), the same crystal structure and the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale as a mined diamond. It is not cubic zirconia, and it is not moissanite. Those are different materials with different optical properties. Under a jeweller’s loupe, and even under a standard microscope, a laboratory-grown diamond and a natural one of comparable cut, colour and clarity look the same. Telling them apart requires specialised screening equipment.

How they are made

Two methods dominate. HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) reproduces the conditions in which diamonds form in the earth. CVD (chemical vapour deposition) grows a diamond from a carbon-rich gas onto a thin diamond seed plate. Both produce rough that is then cut and polished exactly like mined rough, and both are graded on the same four Cs.

What genuinely differs

How to protect yourself

Which should you choose?

If your priority is the largest, brightest stone your budget allows — for an engagement ring you will wear daily, or a piece where size genuinely matters — a laboratory-grown diamond is a rational choice and nobody needs to apologise for it. If your priority is holding value and passing something down, a natural stone is the more traditional route. Neither is the “wrong” answer; what matters is that you are told which one you are buying before you pay, not after.

We work with manufactured (laboratory-grown) diamonds as well as natural stones, and we will always tell you plainly which is which. Ask us to show you both side by side and you will see for yourself how little the difference is to the eye — and how much it is to the budget.
